Olivia Goldhill, a writer for Quartz, focuses mainly on topics of psychology and philosophy. She is interested in the way human brains work and what causes our behavior. She has many articles about behavior in the economy and government, also in speaking styles and neurologists. The author is certainly interested in why we do things, and what causes us to do them. She spends time studying the reasons of emotions and what causes them and writes articles.
Turns out, Olivia Goldhill was a phycology major and found that it ties into many social issues and for that reason she started writing articles about many things that are tied to human actions. She wanted to know why, why humans behave that way, what causes them to do things, what goes on in their mind, and how are people different. She writes her articles mainly to attract other phycologists to see her work, not only that but she has a certain group of audience for every article, to explain the problem in the article. For example In “Rhetoric scholars pinpoint why Trump’s inarticulate speaking style is so persuasive”, this articles audience might be speakers and for news broadcasters, to help them understand the speaking style. The purpose of her writings are to explain why things happen, she answers questions about human behavior and anything that has to do with phycology and philosophy. She wrote many articles on questions that people ask every day, “Why do people get mad over small things”? She also wrote answers to, “For half a century, neuroscientists thought they knew how memory worked. They were wrong”. Others include, “Which anger leads us astray and which anger gets results”, and “Humans are born irrational, and that has made us better decision-makers”. As seen, she provides explanation for human mysteries and questions that people always wonder about. The author uses a calm and resolved tone, she doesn’t try to make any arguments she just states what she believes and provides reasoning and facts. The tone is smooth and makes the articles flow smoothly and audience comprehend the issue she is addressing. Using this tone is crucial for the writer to connect with their audience looking to understand psychological problems. Tim Fernholz, is a reporter for quartz and is interested in reporting tech, and economics, however what is special about him is he always finds a way to connect these 2 topics. The speaker values his work and puts time and effort into each article, He even made his own site for his own work. The author started his career in 2008 where he only edited magazines but he soon realized he wanted to get out there and explore, he felt most comfortable with the area of economics and tech. he reports many articles about new technologies in the economy and how they relate together. The audience he approaches are big companies that he reviews and publishes about what they have recently done. Since there is much competition out there companies don’t want a bad saying about them to be available for people. Also he approaches audiences like economical leaders with money. For these people they are able to see what he has to say about the newest economical tech invention and more about how big companies are doing. Many of his topics are about space, flight, and other counties racing for better equipment for exploring space. He has many topics about NASA like, “NASA won’t rush astronauts back to the moon to please Donald Trump”. That is a headline from an article written by him. Other articles include,” SpaceX is building the world’s most powerful rocket, and it is nearly ready to fly”, and “The US Air Force wants to remind you (and China) that its secret space drone is back”. The purpose of all his articles are to inform, about the specifics of everything. He informs people about the latest launches, flights, economic satiability and more. Whenever business competition spills into the halls of government, economic conflict puts protesters in the street, companies disrupt the way we live or public policy shapes the market, he will be there. Probably with statistics, anecdotes and a lot of nuance. He will surely update everyone with tech companies and trade wars and globalization and political economy. His tone is quite excited and informative at the same time, he describes everything and uses many exclamation marks. Using this tone trough out his articles make his audience engaged and feel the excitement of the subject. He says “The Falcon Heavy has been on Elon Musk’s mind for years: A rocket bigger than anything else currently in operation, only outstripped by the moon rockets of the Apollo program. Too many years, in the minds of his critics. He’s been plotting the rocket since 2005, when he first mused about strapping three nine-engine booster rockets together to put huge amounts of cargo into space. When SpaceX’s first rocket, the Falcon 9, flew in 2008, strapping a trio together as a Falcon Heavy by 2013 seemed feasible to the company. But the schedule kept slipping, and major accidents in 2015 and 2016 that destroyed Falcon 9 rockets forced the company to focus on returning that vehicle to flight. The goal is now to fly in fall 2017, but skeptics remained.” Using this piece, he describes and tells if it is a story, his tone of excitement and combined with informative doesn’t even feel like you are reading an article!

A major key in articles is providing visual representation, because it will help the audience understand better, and will will generate greater response. In many articles i have read, there is always something visual to go with the article, a picture, a video, or other. in the first article I read about STEM engineers, there was a picture of a Indian student struggling, most likely one of the students who was sent to the US lacking programming skills.(unable to download picture) In the second article, the picture provided is from New York, it shows les people in a public class and doesn’t look as crowded, which relates to the title, “The Main Reason Americans are Ditching New York and Flocking to Cowboy Land”. This image provides a background idea for the audience before they even start reading, the image is so broad it can have different meanings to different people. The third article contains GIF, of an abstract woman watering herself as if she was a plant. This related to the overall idea of the article, your daily activities and income earned by yourself will make you happier, “self-reliance” watering yourself will only make you grow. The author relates the GIF to the message of the article and it is an important part in the article because it plays the visual role. (unable to download gif). the 4th article has an image of a student struggling to study, as it is the opposite of the purpose of the article, the article has a new method of studying that is supposed to help the students succeed and raise their grade, the picture is for the purpose of people seeing the struggle of being confused and not knowing what to study, it will have an extra affect to boost the morale of students. However parents who see the picture will feel bad because that is how they see their children and they will be more engaged in the article the 5th article contains an image of people relaxing and enjoying Mother nature, and goes along with the title “The psychological importance of wasting time “it makes wasting time appear as a good thing and that is the main point of the article. Making it appear good will make the reader better side with the argument because the picture already established an image in the audiences head and an idea about wasting time and enjoying time with yourself. The UK could have changed the way the world fights global warming. Instead it blew $200 million. This article criticizes the UK for wasting about 200 million dollars instead of continuing the CCS project, a project to lower the total amount of carbon dioxide in the air. While trying to save money, the government actually wasted more money. In this article the author uses a criticizing tone, criticizing the decisions of the UK government and making them appear dumb. In this article he points out many mistakes that the government has made, including the title which is the first criticizing line. The title says, “The UK could have changed the way the world fights global warming. Instead it blew $200 million." saying this the author already has an upset tone. Using words such as "could have changed", make the audience feel like the UK could have a great impact on the world but they wasted their chance. He does this to make the UK look bad. He also says,"In 2015, when the final bids were submitted, the government got cold feet and canceled the competition once again". While the Uk kept canceling on plans they got left more and more behind and falling behind will only lose them more money. The author also appeals to logos, using many statistics and facts prove how much money was spent by the government. The author says, "£ 100 million went to the second competition alone—for example, £81 million was paid to the two shortlisted projects for early engineering designs". After they spent all that money they decided to cancel, wasting all of that money. They could have just never canceled from the beginning and achieve the CCS project. He hopes to make the Uk look foolish. The diction the author chooses to use is simple, and also using many money related words. He says, "The gap between current CCS and the huge target means there’s a lot of room for the industry to grow". Connecting this issue with money terms will better help the reader understand the full issue that this has caused. The purpose of this article is to inform people about the CCS project in the UK, and to possibly get a repose action from the UK in order to improve the findings and program administrators. The passage closes out with a comparison with china. China has passed the UK in progress even when in 2007 the Uk was first leading. Surely this articles purpose is to also make the UK look bad. the argument is laid out with a cause and effect style, first the author describes what they did and what it caused, it was a successful argument because made me think that the uk was really bad, but I’m sure they had reasons for the mistakes.
